School Safety

Field Note

See the Whole Elephant

Four figures each touching a different part of an elephant labeled target hardening, climate, preparedness and behavior.

An old parable goes… Four blind men meet an elephant for the first time. One grabs the trunk: “It's a snake.” One feels the leg: “It's a tree.” One touches the tail: “It's a rope.” One reaches the ear: “It's a leaf.”

Every one of them is right. Every one of them is wrong.

That is school safety today.

These silos often stem from vendors selling single solutions, shaping tragedies to fit their marketing.

  • The security integrator touches target hardening and sees the whole answer in locks, laminates, cameras, panic buttons and doors.
  • The counselor touches climate and sees it in relationships and connection.
  • The threat assessment team touches behavior and sees it in early warning.
  • The emergency manager touches preparedness and sees it in drills and response.

Each one is holding a real part of the animal. None of them is holding the elephant.

A school can harden every entrance and still miss the student in crisis. It can run flawless drills and never build the climate where a kid feels safe enough to speak up. The parts do not add up to safety until someone steps back and sees the whole.

We have spent years arguing about which part is the elephant. The work now is to stop defending our corner of the animal and start integrating the parts into one. Hardening, climate, behavioral threat assessment, and training are not competing programs. They are one system, or they are nothing.

See the whole elephant.
